The menu on my Website spreads across two lines instead of one in Firefox. It should only be on one line as in Internet Explorer. How come this is happening? Someone else says it displays fine on one line in Firefox: I don't see it.

Do you want to post the address of the site?

One possible reason is different zoom settings. Firefox has two modes of zoom: text only, or proportional (full zoom). Text only zoom is more likely to overflow the containers on a page and either wrap or distort the layout.

To check what kind of zoom you're using, you can use the classic View menu. If you are displaying the orange Firefox button instead of the classic menu bar, tap the Alt key to show the menu bar temporarily.

View menu > Zoom > Zoom Text Only

If checked, you are using text-only zoom. You can toggle this back and forth to see the difference.

If you do not see a difference, the issue could be that your menu bar specifies a font that is smaller than your minimum font size. By default, Firefox does not set a minimum font size, but if you ever set one, then that could be the issue. You can check that in the Options dialog:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content

In the Fonts & Colors section, click the "Advanced" button. Depending on your site encoding, check both Western and Other Language (utf-8) for a minimum font size.

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Command+0 on Mac)

If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

Thank you for responding so promptly. To let you know, I followed your instructions, and Mozilla Firefox still flows the menu to two lines instead of one all the way across at my site: http://stage.henricodemocrats.org/ and it looks fine in Explorer. This site is in Word Press. Thanks anyway.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

I need to make the screen smaller than 1080px to get a second line for the menu.

I see that a remote font (PT Sans) is used for the menu bar, so also check these:

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

Make sure that the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref is set to true (default) on the about:config page.

Your WP theme adapts to the space available (responsive design).

As you make the window narrower, the menu changes from one line to two lines to a button. It also is relative to your zoom level. Even if I maximize the window to 1050 pixels, as I zoom larger and larger (press Ctrl+ repeatedly) the menu morphs in the same way it would as if I had made the window narrower and narrower. Reversing the process (pressing Ctrl- repeatedly) returns me to the one line menu.

You should see the same behavior on their page, although with far fewer menu items, it does not wrap before turning into a button. http://www.themehorse.com/themes/attitude-pro/

If you don't want the menu to wrap to a second line before turning into a button, check with the publisher on how to tweak the theme.

Yes, attached is a screenshot.

See how the menu is spread to two lines instead of one.

This is the address of the Website: http://stage.henricodemocrats.org/

Yes, this is a responsive design in Word Press. I've emailed the support for the Word Press Theme too.

Thank you so much for your advice.

Currently I see 4 rows of items, so you may be in the midst of reorganizing.

Works fine here on Linux.

The attached shows the effect of zooming on the menu. Many users have a default 125% zoom in Firefox either because they enlarged it themselves, or they have a newer version of Windows that comes set to 125% zoom instead of 100%.

more options

Note that the effect of zooming if affected by the width of the Firefox window, i.e. I can zoom less with 1100 and much more with 1600.
I can make the effect (e.g. zoom 150%) as shown in the third screenshot from Jefferson disappear if I maximize the Firefox window (1680).

You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer;Ctrl+Shift+K) and paste window.innerWidth in the command line to see the effect of zooming on the width of the browsing window.

To let you know, the Word Press theme developer responded to my question: How do I tweak the theme so the menu doesn't wrap to two lines in Mozilla Firefox? Answer: If there are many menu items it will eventually go to the next line. So, the way is to limit the number of menu items to single line is to have definite number of menu items. Evidently, the menu appears to be on one line as it should on others' Mozilla Firefox browsers, but on mine, it wraps to two lines. Thank you for all your help. If there was a way to fix it, I would have. Thanks anyway.
