all was good before I yielded to the endless pressure to 'upgrade'. I want to go back to 58x or will now continue to use IE. Nasty situation.

Hi nickeldd, sorry to hear that your update didn't go smoothly. What problems did you encounter, and what is the current status with Firefox 61? For example, Firefox works but is missing certain data (which data?), or Firefox doesn't run (do you get an error message?).

During the process, did Firefox perform a Refresh? That moves your settings folder to the desktop inside an Old Firefox Data folder. If you have that, please retain it for recovery of old files.

1. msg :Firefox is already running, but is not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window.

2. msg: Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.

3. I don't see the Old Firefox Data folder.

For #1, please "kill" the Firefox process in the Windows 7 Task Manager. You can call that up using Ctrl+Alt+Esc. Click the Processes tab. Then find each instance of firefox.exe and right-click > End Process to terminate it.

Will Firefox start normally after that, or is that when you get #2?

For #2, you will need to create a new profile to get any version of Firefox up and running again.

Note: If you haven't tried restarting Windows since this problem began, you might try that first because an inaccessible profile also can be caused by Firefox having incomplete privileges.

Otherwise, see: How to run Firefox when your profile is missing or inaccessible.

There are no instances of FF in the processes tab.

I always get #2 when trying to start.

Okay, please try one of the options for "Profile was deleted" in the article: How to run Firefox when your profile is missing or inaccessible.

I'll keep working on it. Could there be a registry entry causing this? I really don't want to go in there.

Older version on older (spare) computer is still working fine. Just slow. 58.x worked fine on this one. The upgrades made a mess of everything.

more options

To be clear. This comp was working fine until the upgrades.

This comp has more than enough resources to run FF.

Older (other) comp is running XP and older version of FF and still works fine, just slow.

Still think this is a mess. Something is just not right with my comp and 60 / 61.

This is why we do the whole trouble reports and solutions. D

To catch up on where we are:

(1) You are now able to run Firefox after using either Method #1 or Method #2 in How to run Firefox when your profile is missing or inaccessible to work around the missing profile problem?

(2) Performance is worse than pre-Firefox 60 in one or more ways: what isn't working as well?

This computer I am using to communicate with you (#1) will not run Firefox after upgrading from 58x . I have repeatedly uninstalled first 60.x and then 61.x and re-installed.

I keep getting the same error messages.

I am using IE to communicate.

To be clear, I have another, older computer that I use as a back up. It is #2. Running XP and an older version of Ff.

There must be a file somewhere that I can't find and delete. d

I made sure the profile properties had the 'read only' unchecked.

Multiple trials of repair solutions have not worked. Repeated uninstall / reinstall of 61 have not fixed the issue. I have run anti - malware and complete AV scans.

I have gone through the Mozilla help files. It is just not going to work. Even if I try to start with a new / fresh profile.

I just don't know what to do next.

Want me to give you remote access so you can look every where in my computer?

I'm ready to wipe the HD and start over with W7 install and then try to rebuild everything as it was before this Ff issue.

You get this error (Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible) when the profile listed in profiles.ini that is marked with Default=1 is missing.

The solution to this issue is normally to use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.

I have done all of the suggestions. I can do new profile but cannot import bookmarks and history from older version 57.x This has been a mess.

more options

You should be able to restore the bookmarks from a compressed .jsonlz4 in the backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.

This shouldn't be necessary though. If there were problems with places.sqlite (bookmarks and history) then importing or restoring might not work. Such places.sqlite issues can also be caused by a corrupted favicons.sqlite file, so you can try to remove this file with Firefox closed. If there is a places.sqlite.corrupt file then try to rename this file to places.sqlite after you have removed favicons.sqlite.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
