Thunderbird 31.5.0 Win 8.1 Broadband 14Mbps / 0.9 Mbps Gmail defaults (imap.googlemail.com, port 993/SSL/TLS, normal password). Yahoomail defaults (imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993 SSL/TLS, normal password).

Message notifications can take several minutes. Messages can take several minutes to lead. Meanwhile the little wait clock icon goes round and round.

I have refreshed my global database.

The problem does not happen on my android tablet mail client.

I have re-entered my account details, and even removed and re opened my mail accounts. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird. I temporarily installed opera client and no such problems (it is otherwise a hopeless client!)

While this is going on Thunderbird uses around 30% system CPU. When Thunderbird is running it uses a whopping 300MB of system memory, far more than any other program.

What is going on here?

In addition to the above, the keyboard is very slow while all this is going on - it can take a second or more to respond to a keypress.

Matt, I am using Windows Defender. I have now turned off real time protection and will see if this solves the problem. An additional prissue is that the problem is intermittent.

intermittent make it hard to diagnose. Have you changed any of your other devices lately? sometimes we see strange interactions through IMAP from phones and tablets

Well, it has been OK for the past few days. I have two tablets using IMAP email clients but I don't think that is the problem - switching them off doesn't solve the problem. I am still wondering about the system activity - is that much activity normal?

'I do see high CPU on getting mail occasionally, but 30% is high, my old XP box used to show that while Thunderbird and MSE slogged it out over who got access to the files first. MSE went away and ESET replaced it. I have not has really high CPU issues since.

Using Nightly builds as I do I get most serious bugs early and sometime it just does not work at all. But when on the bleeding edge you expect to bleed.

The problem when it happens can persist for about a day. It has been ok for the past few days. The memory useage is still 300KB but only a small CPU load. I don't recall having the problem when I was using Linux - next time I am minded to try it on Linux. Maybe there is some quirk in Windows - how unusual.

how large is you mail store? It could be that defender is scanning the contents while Thunderbird is running. On a profile of several gig (like mine) that could take all day.
