I found a couple of questions posted about this with a search, but there are no useful answers, so here goes again. How can I turn off the green download indicator in the taskbar. I find it unpleasant and intrusive, and I would like to turn it off. Does anyone know of a way to do so? I think rolling back to an older version of Firefox would work, but I keep getting popups telling me that those are unsafe. Am I stuck with this ugly and apparently unchangeable thing on my taskbar unless I switch to a different browser?

I am running Firefox 30.0 in Windows 7, but the taskbar thing has been appearing for a few versions now with no way to turn it off. I had heard that future releases would return control of appearance to the user, but that has not happened the best I can tell.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Oops, please ignore, I was thinking of the download button on the toolbar

Could you try using the Customize feature to move it either onto the menu or into the pile of unused icons?

Either of these might do it:

  • right-click the arrow > Move to Menu or Remove from Toolbar
  • "3-bar" menu > Customize then drag to desired location and drop there

Does that work?

I last looked at this last September in this thread: How do I turn off the green download indicator that overlays the taskbar icon. I can try to look into it again tonight to see whether there are any changes or anticipated changes.

I don't see anything in the code indicating that there is a way to bypass the task bar progress indicator. Maybe someone needs to file a new bug to get a preference created?

You can file a new bug here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi

Note that there is a pref to disable the animation on the Navigation Toolbar.

I have the opposite problem. I used the "Move to Menu" feature to remove the green download indicator from the toolbar, and then regretted having done that. I have looked everywhere I can think of to find it and get it back, but can't find it anywhere. Can anyone suggest where it might have gone -- so that I can get it back? Thanks!

Hi SGNichols, if you find it on the "3-bar" menu, you can right-click and Move to Toolbar. However, this will place it at the right end of the toolbar and if you have a lot of buttons, it may end up on the overflow drop-down list (there is a >> button in that case). To drag the arrow to your preferred location, try using the Customize feature. If it can't be found anywhere, you can restore the default toolbar layout using the "Restore Defaults" button in the Customize panel.

jscher2000, thanks for that help. "Restore Defaults" did it!
