Was holding ctrl and selecting messages for delete when somehow the sort of my messages changed from newest message to oldest message to something I am not sure of. How do I change order of message displayed back to new message to oldest email?

Clicking on any column header makes that the primary sort column. Clicking that header a second time reverses the sort.
It sounds like you clicked on DATE.
