Normally clicking on + brings up screen of windows. Mine has inexplicably gone blank.

I have not had any problem for years so have not bothered to export my bookmarks. Suddenly and inexplicably firefox was slow to load. The drop down site menu was blank and the screen of recently visited sites - the 9 pages/tabs that fill the screen when you click on + was blank. Even when I tried to use my bookmarks and history it was fruitless. I was literally back to square 1. Even now having visited numerous sites when I click on + the screen is BLANK.

Could you check on your desktop for a folder named Old Firefox Data? If you see that, then Firefox performed a Reset and your old data should be in there. Let us know what you find, if anything.

If you view your bookmarks in the Library dialog, do they appear there? You can open it using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

On the "new tab" page, do you see 9 empty placeholders, or is there a little icon of 9 squares on the upper right side (try clicking it), or is it completely blank?

If it's completely blank, you can switch it back to thumbnails using a hidden setting.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter your preferred page:

  • Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab
  • Blank tab => about:blank
  • Built-in Firefox home page => about:home
  • Any other page => full URL to the page

Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

Two gotchas:

  • If Firefox ignores the setting, one of your extensions may be overriding it. You can review, disable, and/or remove extensions on the add-ons page:

    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > in the left column click Extensions
  • If the change works but at the next startup is blank again, you might have a user.js file in your personal Firefox settings folder (your Firefox profile folder). This article describes how to track down and remove the file: How to fix preferences that won't save. Another possible cause of undone/reverted settings is the surfing protection feature of Advanced SystemCare, or similar feature of other security/utility software.

Any luck?
