When I open a new tab and use a bookmark to 'fill' it, why does a new blank tab appear automatically? How do prevent this from happening?

Upon opening Firefox, my 'Home Page' tab appears along with a 'clear' empty tab to the right. Every time you 'fill' in the 'clear tab (with a bookmark) another empty tab appears. This must be something to do with the new versions of Firefox (my guess). Are there any settings in 'Options' that may have been overlooked that can prevent this from happening?

You can check the home page setting and make sure that there isn't a pipe (|) appended.
