Thunderbird stopped showing new mail alerts
In spite of my settings (see image attached), since about a week ago, T'bird has not reliably shown the unread message alert nor shown the unread symbol on the task bar.

It sounds like you have encountered a recently discovered bug. It's been reported and, presumably, will be fixed soon. You can follow the bug report here if you like:
