Re Mailfence - necessary or not?
When I installed Thunderbird it prompted me to set up a Mailfence email account. But when my colleague installed Thunderbird he wasn't prompted to set up a Mailfence email account.

You don't need a Mailfence account to use Thunderbird. Use Thunderbird with your existing email accounts.
