Thunderbird has stopped downloading emails

Thunderbird stopped downloading e-mails, I uninstalled it, rebooted the PC and reinstalled it, but does not download my e-mails. What can I do?

I see under account settings that in.virgilio.it is IMAP, but it must be POP. How can I change it?

When IMAP used to work before, then it's unlikely that this is the problem. The account type does not magically change without user interaction.
