If you look at the number of items listed for those dates, is there any that looks like you might want to try restoring it? Or have you already tried that?

Okay, bottom line mozilla firefox updated and my bookmarks went away most likely due to the update (it has happened to many others) It has been over a week of trying to get them back to no avail. I do not have hours to spend trying to fix a computer problem I did not cause. This is past the point of being a waste of time. Can some one help me with a quick fix that works or can they recommend a Reliable web browser that will not dump my book marks and then ask me to pay to retrieve them.

Hi cascadewaterrat, what happened when you tried to restore a backup?

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1190755?page=2#answer-1048675

Was there a specific error message? Did you not see the bookmarks listed under Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar in the Library window after the restore?

no error messages, only bookmarks listed are since last update. When I click the link absolutely nothing happens

Earlier you had written:

You no longer see those earlier files now?

One potential cause of that error is if dates in the file (e.g., date the bookmark was added) are blank. Could you try converting to an Uncompressed JSON format and restore that.

In detail:

(1) Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Resize this window so you can see Firefox behind it, then switch over to the Firefox window

(2) Open

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/bookbackreader.html

then switch back to Windows Explorer so you can drag and drop onto that page

(3) Double-click into the bookmarkbackups folder

(4) Drag a recent backup onto the tool and drop it there. Data should appear in the box and the buttons should become enabled. Try saving in both formats to an easily accessible location such as Desktop or Documents. (Blank dates will be replaced with today's date.)

(5) In Firefox's Library window, back on the Restore menu, click "Choose File" and try the .json file you saved and see whether Firefox can restore it

If Firefox still gives an error, use the Import command and try the .html file you saved.

Will either of those restore/import?

It seems the three possibilities are:

(1) The backup files are corrupted.

The only way I know to fix them is through the converter page I mentioned in my last reply. Sorry to hear that didn't work for you.

(2) Your Places database file is corrupted or locked in some way that prevents restoring bookmarks.

You could remove the database and have Firefox build a new one, but this will remove all your history as well. See: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message.

(3) Your Firefox program files are corrupted. The usual approach to that is:

Clean Re-install

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

It only takes a few minutes.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

If you use Microsoft Office, please change your default browser to Internet Explorer before the next step (you can change it back later).

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer (hold down the Windows key and press E), right-click > rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

When you try the Restore after the clean reinstall, do you still get the same error message about the file? Or trying to Import the converted HTML file?

Last question, is it at all possible to retrieve my bookmarks or is this a futile undertaking. If so can some one recommend a decent RELIABLE web browser.

Try Microsoft Edge. In its settings, you can either import (A) directly from Firefox, or (B) from a file. You would have generated the HTML-format file using my converter page.

See: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2017/05/15/windows-10-tip-import-data-from-another-browser-to-microsoft-edge-in-one-step/

Does either method work?

  1. 1
  2. 2
