Write and reply does not work

Thunderbird greys out upon clicking 'write' and 'reply'. No write window opens up but list of write attempts items does show in dock when right clicking Thunderbird (see img attached) . I'm on latest version 45.5.0. Mac OSX 10.11.16 Error start 25 Nov 2016. I've restarted, replaced app (downloaded replaced) but problem persists.
