When I highlight an unread message in the list, it marks the message as "read" even if I don't open it. I don't want that. Can I change it?
I don't want a message in the inbox to be "un-bolded" (marked as "read") until I actually open it, but right now just highlighting a message causes it to be marked as "read". Can't find an option to change that. Is there one?

You obviously have the reading pane turned on, so you are opening and reading the message by clicking on it. Try pressing F8 to turn off the reading pane.
