how can I manually upgrade a ZTE Open C to 2.1?

I have a ZTE Open C with 1.3, I would like to upgrade to 2.1 to play around. Has someone done it? Can I just install the build that I want to try (this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/firefox-os/general/zte-c-2-1-modui-t2853315) by entering recovery mode and selecting the proper .zip file in the SD card or do I have to do something before? if I understand correctly I have to root the phone before, would this upgrade do it? -> http://www.ztedevices.com/support/smart_phone/46d40c52-bed4-4cdc-9df9-01719cdf0a70.html?type=software

It is up to you if you want to risk flashing your device where the build is not directly from ZTE. There is the possibility of bricking your device as well. Please proceed at your own risk. Geeksphone has a set of instructions here, provided I do NOT know what is inside the .zip.
