Thunderbird 148+ on Windows 11 repeatedly prompts for the password when synchronizing an Exchange account (professional) configured with the native Exchange support (no add-on installed).

The account only offers “NTLM” or “Normal password” authentication methods. OAuth2 is not available in the account settings.

During synchronization, Thunderbird asks for the password separately for many folders. However, clicking “Retry” usually works immediately without changing the password, and manually re-entering the same password also works.

The issue then reappears for the next folder, causing continuous authentication prompts (I have many folders...).

Actions already tested:

• deleting saved passwords and tokens,
• deleting/renaming key4.db and logins.json,
• restarting Thunderbird,
• recreating the account.

The problem persists.

This looks like an authentication/session handling issue rather than an actual invalid password.

I recently moved from Microsoft Outlook email to Apple icloud email. icloud allows you to create an application-specific password, which I did for email. It works; I can login to email on Thunderbird using my (impossible to remember long) password automatically generated by Apple. I switched the Thunderbird server settings to OAuth, but unlike with Outlook, there was no popup saying a restart of Tbird is required. When I quit Tbird and restarted, it did not prompt for a pw, but neither did it get any new messages. (I sent new messages from another email service to verify.)

I also noticed that OAuth2 was not an available option for the outgoing server, as it was with Outlook.

Does OAuth2 not work with icloud email?

There appears to be no way to change the app-specific icloud pw in Apple, but I will take that up with Apple.

Perhaps the workaround is to use the Tbird saved pw feature?

I've been trying to create and account on thunderbird with both my outlook and posteo emails but every time I click on 'create an account' it says:

Authentication error.

Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password.

It showed me the same message last year when I tried to use thunderbird for the first time, and again now that I tried again thinking it was an issue that might have been fixed since then. I double check the configuration, username and password for both me emails but it doesn't want to got through. I tried it both on my computer with the desktop version and on my android phone, and neither works.

Is there anything I could do to fix this issue?

Lorsque j'essaie d'ajouter un nouveau compte, la configuration est trouvé dans la base de données des FAI de Mozilla, je clic sur "continuer", dans la fenêtre Popup j'autorise Thunderbird a accéder à mes informations, ensuite j'ai le message "erreur d'authentification". Pourtant mon mot de passe est correcte.

I can not get my google workspace account to authorize in Thunderbird. Using IMAP setting. Thunderbird automatically finds the correct server settings, but when I hit "continue", it gives an authentication error.

I have spent extensive time with the google workspace admin console help. This is the final result: "Thank you for trying all the steps so far. Since Thunderbird has already been added under App Access Control in the Admin console, IMAP is enabled, and cookies/cache have been cleared, but the authentication error still persists, this points to a possible issue with the application’s client ID used by Thunderbird for OAuth. Once you have the correct client ID, we can then configure it properly in the Google Admin console so the authentication works successfully. We’ve confirmed that all Google Workspace settings on our side are correct, so the next step must be coordinated with Thunderbird’s team."

I'm trying to put thunderbird on my laptop, but after entering the password I keep getting an error message saying the password or settings must be wrong. But I've checked the incoming & outgoing settings, my password a few times now & I know everything is correct. So why do I keep getting this error message & is there a way to fix this? I'm running windows 10.

Hello, Previously, I had my email with Xfinity, but they stopped this service and set us to Yahoo Mail. I’ve had no luck in setting it up in Outlook, so I tried Thunderbird and encountered the same problem. I have Windows 11. I’m using the IMAP settings recommended by Yahoo. During the setup process, everything checks, but when it asks for an address, which is from Xfinity, and a password, which I’m not sure they’re asking for so I tried the Xfinity, Yahoo, and Mozilla passwords. I get the authentication error on each attempt. Help! Thanks, Parris

If I have a password to sign into my Thunderbird emails, where do I find it. I haven't gotten this requirement in the past so where might I find it now and/or stop those messages?

After moving my Thunderbird profile to a new computer none of my accounts can authenticate. I followed the instructions here: Move Thunderbird data to a new computer, using "An alternative method for manual transfer between Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers." What explains the response in the attached image, "Something went wrong," and how can I fix it? Happens when I click "Next", the first step to log it.

I have a related problem with other accounts set up in the profile. This one is using Oauth2. I tried switching to password, and hand a similar problem. I tested the connection to the server in Settings for the account and it was successful. Same for the others. They all authenticate successfully on my old computer.

When I try to access my email on Thunderbird, I keep getting the same message: Login to account "jayoung3@icloud.com" failed Login to server imap.mail.me.com with username jayoung3 failed.

I changed my password but I still can't access my email. And I have an account recovery code (which I don't know how to use).

I had TB on my desktop for years and finally got it also synced to my phone. Then with a failure with Windows 11 had to wipe clean the desktop and start over. Cannot reinstall TB. I obviously have the correct e-mail and password as I was able to log into Mozilla and submit this question. I believe it is a problem with my user name and what is on my phone setup does not work with my desktop reinstallation.

I have filled in an un-correct password a number of times due to incorrect language setting of my keyboard. Then the popup window for this disappeared, and I cannot find a place to enter password. What can I do? It is the password for outgoing email.

In setting up a new PC (laptop), I must make my password known to the software. But I cannot remember my password. On my existing, older, laptop, I saved my email password long ago i.e. I do not have to enter my password, on the older laptop in order to get email. I no longer remember my own password. I am trying to reinstall Thunderbird on my computer using Windows 10 and I get a pop-up box requesting to sign in to my Google account and then an authentication error message. How do I get past this?
