there have been times when Bing, chrome and others have attempted to change my browser . I want to use only Firefox, there have also been attempts to change my home page.

You must be installing malware, how to avoid it, follow below.
Avoid shady sites
If you visit a shady site (one you dont know or have never ever visited in your life) be cautious, the Web of Trust addon helps block most sites that can harm your computer (but is not a replacement to a antivirus tool).
