Mac OS X 10.10.5, currently TB v45.4.0 but this happened to me several months ago too using a previous version of TB.

I got an error message about Inbox mail marked as junk could not be moved to the Junk folder because of not enough free disk space (2T HD, huge amount of free space). At that time I removed a ton of old emails although I did not want to and it seemed to resolve the problem.

With this version I'm getting the message again, every few days. I have discovered that if I mark the marked junk mail as "Not Junk", quit TB then restart it, I can then mark the offending emails as Junk and they will properly be moved to the Junk folder without an error.

I do remember between the first time this happened and now, one update changelog mentioned that this problem had been fixed, but obviously it has returned.

You do not mention the size of this Junk folder. Quite often people empty the Junk, but do not compact the folder afterwards to remove all traces of deleted emails, so the folder might be a lot bigger than you think. When was the last time you compacted the 'Junk' folder ? Right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Compact'.

Deleted emails are 'marked as deleted' and hidden. When you Compact that folder, those 'marked as deleted' emails are removed and space is recovered. Regular compacting of Inbox and Junk folders is strongly advised.

Did compacting work?

Thanks for the info. I did not know what Compact did, thinking it was just another compression scheme -- which I did not want to use.

I'll give it a try for a week or so, but for the moment I will consider this the solution to the problem.

Compacting is quite important. This is a link to good explanation about compacting, what it does and why it is important to help maintain a healthy Thunderbird.

Thanks for the link.

TB should have been doing it automatically since the default of 20MB was set in Prefs. I changed it to 10MB; we'll see if that makes a difference.

[UPDATE] Well, the Compact settings have no effect. This is the same exact problem that was supposedly fixed a few versions ago.

As I previously noted, unchecking the Junk flag, restarting TB then reflagging it as Junk makes it work.

I no longer consider the problem solved.
