When I add one or more custom toolbars (point at a toolbar, right click, customise, add new toolbar) and add a few or loads or of buttons in the toolbars, the next time I start firefox the toolbars are gone and the buttons are all back in the customize section.

After adding I can hide and show the toolbars without any problem but after a firefox shutdown and restart the toolbars are gone.

This happened in 25.0.1 and now in 26.

I have loads of custom buttons (Custom Buttons 0.0.5.7) which work like a charm but its incredible annoying to lose the toolbars and buttons.

Windows OS 7 - 32 bit latest updates applied.

I've reset the toolbars, no success. I've deleted the localstore.rdf. I can see the bars when I create them in the localstore.rdf file when I restart the entries are gone from the file and the toolbars have dissapeared.

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Some users have recently reported that external security or utility software will revert their Firefox settings to protect them from unwanted changes. But also from their own changes. If any of these sound familiar, either as a program you have or a feature of a program, please check whether you can disable it:

  • Advanced SystemCare
  • Surfing Protection or Home Page Protection
  • BrowserProtect or Browser Protection

Also, you may find a backup copy of the localstore.rdf file in your profile folder or in a subfolder that is being used to revert your changes. I don't know what it would be called, but for example, Advanced SystemCare creates a file that may be a copy of prefs.js under the name ascsurfingprotection.js.

This still sounds like a problem caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

It is also possible that you have other security software that is preventing this file against changes.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

I have a similar but not identical problem. I created a custom toolbar which worked fine for years until very recently. Now, when I launch Firefox, the custom toolbar is gone. However, it returns if I simply open a new window. In other words, the toolbar fails to load when Firefox first launches but then loads fine in every new window after the first one.

Thoughts?

I have created a new toolbar with the name "name" and placed a single spacer item on it and get this in localstore.rdf:

<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://browser/content/browser.xul#customToolbars"
                 toolbar1="name:spacer" />

This toolbar is still there when I close and restart Firefox.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
