How do I do a Firefox to Firefox bookmark import?

I had a horrible rootkit that I managed to purge, but decided to reload OS anyway. I backed up all my data, and would now like to restore my bookmarks. Simply renaming the new <bar>.default to <bar>.default.NEW and copying the old <foo>.default file into the profiles folder didn't have me looking at my old bookmarks.

Via the app, I'm only offered the option to import from IE. Or, if I had known, I could have exported to HTML and imported from that file. But now all I have is the old default file.

Any tips?
