Pictures from phone to Thunderbird only shows extension #, not actual picture

I want to send photographs from my Android phone to the "pictures" section of the Thunderbird e-mail program. The photos are going into that section but I can't see the picture itself as they just show wording as extensions. How do I get the actual picture to show up? How do I put my desired description of each of the "pictures" on the list along with the extension wording?
