Our business email is technically a Gmail account that shows as our business name. (info@businessname.com) In past Gmail allowed us to set up emails on Thunderbird or other system as a POP account. As such the email would be set up as this..... recent:info@businessname.com This allowed us to receive emails on multiple computers where each person could file or delete as needed.

Gmail has since required us to only use IMAP accounts for security. In Thunderbird when you set up an IMAP account it will not let you put the word "recent" in front of the email name AND if someone deletes the email on one computer or phone it is then deleted on the others.

The oddest thing about this whole mess is one of our computers still has the POP account for one email (we have 4 emails) and three had to be set up as an IMAP.

Any suggestions on how to get around this issue?

Thanks in advance

Hi.

Would you please say more about what the issue is and why it is an issue? I would think that IMAP would work well in this situation. It does what your subject says.

How have you been using “recent”?

"If you're using the same Gmail POP account with multiple email clients [or on multiple computers] you need to enable recent mode in order to let each email client access all of the messages in that account. You can do that by replacing username@gmail.com with recent:username@gmail.com as the username in Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings."

I've never heard that gmail is not allowing POP accounts, although POP might need to be enabled in webmail settings.

Instead of deleting mail in an IMAP account, users could move messages to a folder named e.g. Read or Removed.

Thanks, sfhowes. I am not familiar with gmail or POP.

sfhowes, Thanks for your reply. The recent:username@gmail.com worked great for our POP accounts. Due to security Gmail required us to change to IMAP accounts. Under an IMAP account you can not use recent:username@gmail.com - it won't recognize the account if you do.

I will ask our users to move messages that I need instead of deleting. It will help until I can find a fix.
