Inbox emails disappear when I delete one. Have to restart Thunderbird, then they "reappear."

Hello, I have been using Thunderbird for a long time and have a lot of saved messages because I use it to document projects and conversations, etc. About 6 years ago, Thunderbird deleted all my emails and I never recovered them. Sometime last year, I realized that in the older emails, the body of the emails and their subject lines were all mixed up, that is, the email was intact but the subject line was from a different email. I tried to re-index (?) the files and this helped, but didn't completely resolve the issue. Now, my problem is that, when I am reviewing my inbox and delete an unwanted message, the inbox goes blank. I have to close Thunderbird and reopen it, and then the inbox reappears. I get hundreds of emails per day and I need to be able to delete them as I go. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Those are clear signs of mbox file corruption. What type of account is this (POP, IMAP)?

have a lot of saved messages

This could be the cause of the problem if you store all that mail in a single huge folder.

I tried to re-index (?) the files and this helped, but didn't completely resolve the issue.

Keeping that folder under heavy use with a problem that re-creating the index couldn't fix can only make things worse.

What I would do to try to fix the problem is quit Thunderbird, make a backup of your profile folder, and move the mbox file associated with your Inbox to a location within Local Folders (only the mbox file without extension, get rid of the accompanying .msf file), so that Thunderbird recreates Inbox again and you may try to salvage what you can from the old, apparently corrupt Inbox, without that interfering with normal Thunderbird usage.

Here are instructions on how to find your profile folder if you're unfamiliar with that:
