I keep Firefox open in the background on my iPad. Every time I go to it, a new tab opens up,that jumps to my Goodreads app. This drives me crazy. Can anyone suggest how I can get it to stop doing that?

You can avoid restoring previous tabs by changing Settings > Homepage > Opening Screen > Homepage. You can also stop opening tabs in apps by changing Settings > Open links in apps > Never.

If it still happens it could be one of your extensions.
