The process is not guaranteed and incurs some risk. - close thunderbird - click Windows key and 'r' key and in the small window that opens enter this: 

     thunderbird.exe -p --allow-downgrade

I recommend making full backup of profile first, just for your safety. Generally, I do not recommend reverting to prior version, as you will eventually need to upgrade. It is true, the current version defaults to a threaded view, but there are steps to undo that.
