Hi Tvhrck

What problem do you have? Is this a problem with the bookmarks since you mention places.sqlite?

You appear to be using Firefox 68 (Beta or Developer Edition).

You should have a profile folder with places.sqlite. Note that the profile folder is in a hidden location in "AppData\Roaming".

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

In case errors are reported with "Verify Integrity" close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

What problem do you have?

My problem is the inability to remove an unused tag.

Were you able to locate places.sqlite via the instructions I posted above (about:profiles) ?

Yes, @ "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\r9i1l5e8.default". Thank. I made a backup of my bookmarks, deleted all the bookmarks from the browser, closed it, deleted the places.sqlite, launched the browser, tried to delete all tags - they are not deleted.

more options

Then you can try to create an HTML backup. A JSON backup includes tags and an HTML backup doesn't include tags, so the JSON backup that Firefox uses to restore the bookmarks when you remove places.sqlite could already be corrupted.

But then I will lose all the tags of thousands of bookmarks?

more options

If you have that many tags and do not want to lose them then you shouldn't use an HTML backup.

You can try to add this tag to a bookmark and then clear the tag folder for this tag to see if that works.

@cor-el, what is the tag folder?

more options

You can find all tags listed under the Tags folder in the Library in the left panel. If necessary then expand the tags folder. If you select a specific tag in the left panel then Firefox shows all bookmarks with this tag in the right panel. You can select all items in the right panel and delete then to clear this tag. Deleting items in the tag folder will only remove the tag from the bookmark and not the bookmark itself.
