Firefox Android signing into sync successfully but then not actually logged in

I've had a problem for a while now (since v55 I think?) Where the release version of Forefoz for Android has been able yo sign in to my sync account, send me the confirmation, follow the link, see the "Sign-in confirmed" message, but then not have access to my sync accouny.

When I try to access the sync preferences it just asks me to log in again. Nothing is synced. And I even get the notification email saying there was a login to my account...

Oh for reference I've been using Firefox Beta instead since v55 and THAT syncs fine and logs in. I tried it when I first had the problem (which was after a clean ROM install)
