Thunderbird marks all messages as unread

Thunderbird repeatedly marks all messages in a folder as unread (bold), regardless of whether they are old or new messages.

Things I have tried: Updating everything to latest versions. Right-clicking a folder and selecting "Mark folder as read" - Thunderbird just reverts back to marking them all unread. Right-clicking and selecting "Properties/Repair folder" - has no effect.

Other info: I have about 23 folders with messages going back several years. Perhaps this is asking too much? (I don't see why it should be!).

Thunderbird regularly freezes ("not responding" and the window whites out).

Further info:

If I mark a folder as read, it will stay read until I click on it, at which point it will revert back to being displayed as bold and all the messages in the folder as unread.
