Using Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 Pro, Firefox ESR 38.7.0

Over the past year I have had the following problem with various versions of FF. When I click a link in my email, sometimes it will open the link in FF. Other times not. I turned off extensions by starting FF in safe mode, but same problem. Sometimes links open, and then successive links do not. I have to copy the link from email as shortcut and then Paste & Go in FF

Yes, FF is set as my default browser!

Never had this problem in all earlier versions over past years. If it's not the extensions, what is it??
