Downloaded the icon for the toolbar on my mac book pro and it was working until today. I don't know why, but when I click it, nothing happens. If I click the banner that shows up on the upper right corner of my screen when I get mail, it opens normally. I have to be quick with my mouse, but it does open and function normally. Trouble is, I have to wait until that banner appears to open the program.

First, please double check you've installed the program correctly. Sometimes user may try to run the application from an incomplete download or something like that. This link shows a Firefox installation, but if you simply replace the FF icons with Thunderbird, the result is the same. Here's the link: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox#Mac_OS_X

If the installation is ok, then try running Disk Utility (inside Applications > Utilities) and repair permissions.

If that doesn't help, then maybe the problem could be an incompatible theme/extension. Try running TBird on Safe Mode to see if there is any conflict with extensions and themes. To start Safe Mode, quit TBird (if it's running -- which is your case). Then open Terminal and type this line exactly as is (copy the line and paste it on Terminal after the prompt):

/Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin -safe-mode

If TBird works well without any problems, then you'll know the problem is either an extension or theme installed.
