Can't remove a smilie when writing an email. Backspace/delete will not remove smilie while writing new email?

While writing a new email, I'll put in a smilie. Then decide I don't want the smilie there, so I go to delete it and I can't remove it. Can't backspace over it or highlight it to remove it either.

Example would be while typing this note, I put in in a smilie here... (pretend smilie here) But then decide I don't want it and want to change the sentence. So I could hit the backspace and remove this sentence, up to the smilie. The smilie won't delete?
