I am currently using Windows XP, and I wanted to know if I will be able to recover my current bookmarks after I install Firefox, as well as anything saved to my desktop.

I would back up the bookmarks to an external location (outside the profile, and maybe to a flash stick or a CD). That way, you have a backup copy that you can restore. In fact, you could back up your entire profile.
