You can set this pref to true on the about:config page to open the results in a new tab.

  • about:config page: browser.search.openintab = true

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

That helps. But now left clicking opens in tabs as well.

Its a pretty standard idea among browsers: -Left click opens link in window. -Middle click opens link in new tab.
