Can not find where to write a new message- everything is different and not easy to use!
the toolbar or something is very different on new thunderbird and I can not find an easy button to write a new message.

Sounds like you are missing toolbars.
Pressing the alt key or F10 will make hidden toolbars appear.
From the menu bar select View-Toolbars and turn the missing toolbars back on. The Write button is on the Mail Toolbar.

That was super easy. Too bad I already wasted an hour! Now I see what I needed but notice there is no delete button on the top and only one on the side. Can I move it to the top?
You can right click any toolbar and select customize and see what buttons are available.) I am on an android phone right now so I cannot access Thunderbird to check.
