Out of the blue a couple days ago, Thunderbird would receive messages but I couldn't click on them or anything else (menu bar, close icon, etc). This was on Thunderbird 52.3. I downgraded to Thunderbird 52.2.1 and everything was working again, but didn't realize it was set to automatically upgrade, so the next day, it upgraded me to 52.3 and the problem re-appeared. I downgraded again to 52.2.1, set it to not automatically upgrade, and everything was working again. Today, the problem of nothing being clickable even though new messages would be received) appeared again. I looked in the Windows Uninstall manager (b/c, again, nothing is clickable so I can't click the Help option in the menu bar to access "About Thunderbird" to see what version it is, and Windows Uninstaller says 52.2.1.

Not sure what to do anymore. I looked up on here where someone suggested restarting TB in safe mode to see what add-ons might be causing compatibility issues, but when I did that, I can't get to the Add-ons menu option b/c nothing is clickable, even in safe mode.

I'm considering abandoning ship and trying a different email client unless someone knows how to resolve this.

You obviously have seen evidence of things working fine in 52.2.1. My guess is that an add-on or theme does not work well with 52.3.0, and the attempt to launch Safe Mode failed. The issue reoccurring may be caused by the download initiating again right before you configured Thunderbird not to update automatically.

For what it’s worth: you could open a file explorer, browser to the thunderbird.exe file in the application’s program folder, right-click it, choose Properties and select the Details tab to see Thunderbird’s version number anyway.

For starting in Safe Mode and finding out what’s wrong:

  1. Be sure to hold down Shift a number of seconds when clicking the Thunderbird shortcut to launch it. Some people release it right after clicking the shortcut, which may cause it to start normally.
  2. You should see the dialog presented like in the Troubleshoot Mode Thunderbird support article. In that dialog, you can choose to "Continue in Safe Mode", which will be a one-off launch with add-ons disabled for a test. If you check "Disable all add-ons" however and click "Make Changes and Restart", it will just disable all add-ons while launching regular mode, which is better for your issue.
  3. Check to see if Thunderbird runs fine now (and while at it, the Thunderbird version) - it should.
  4. Make sure you have selected the default theme (under Appearance in the Add-ons Manager), i.e. any other one is disabled at least.
  5. At this point, allow Thunderbird to update to 52.3.0.
  6. In 52.3.0, enable the add-ons one by one, restart when prompted, and see when the issue starts to reoccur. It may be best to start with enabling another than the default theme, or rather, the non-default theme you used previously (if any).
  7. If you found out which add-on or theme caused the issue, leave it disabled for now, or try to find an update (or an alternative - check its support page to see if it is still maintained.)
