emails are there but I can't access them
Thunderbird keeps telling me that emails have arrived and the number beside inbox is getting bigger, but there are no emails to read. Some emails arrive, but I am missing others. I have ensured that I have plenty of space, emptied the trash, compacted the folders but I can't get these emails to show up and am lost as what to do, so all help is appreciated

but there are no emails to read.
Can you explain that in more detail? Perhaps a screenshot would help. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem
Sorry I can't do a screen shot because I have sort of solved the problem. But, I kept getting notifications that emails had arrived but they didn't seem to be there. Out of frustration I started sorting emails by date, sender, subject and then all of a sudden the emails were there for me to read! It has happened twice now that i start receiving emails but can't see them. Same trick worked the second time.
I use View|Folders|Unread to locate all the unread messages.
You may be, inadvertently or otherwise, turning on Threaded view, which does tend to bury new messages under older ones.
Also check View|Sort By to see what's going on in the sorting.
