I need to have the Always Ask option engaged when clicking on .mp3 links in my own websites as I use them. I don't want Quicktime on my computer in any way, shape or form, as it does not play nice with other software I have on my main system. If I cannot do this with the latest version of Firefox please let me know so I can search for another browser that will me to choose what I would to run. I have already tried to disabled the plugin with absolutely no success and I have changed my options in the Firefox screens to always ask, again with no success. Note the troubleshooting feature of this questionnaire is failing as well.

hello slewis3, quicktime is installed on a system level - therefore please go into your windows control panel > programs section and remove quicktime from there.

Quicktime was removed from my system prior to reaching out to you. Firefox keeps using Quicktime to play mp3's from websites.

Then you need to remove the Quicktime plugin. You should be able to find it if you use the finder in the operating system. The filename is something like npqt.dll. You should be able to find the name in the "about:plugins" panel. Type about:plugins into the address bar.

Note that current releases can play MP3 files via the AUDIO tag in the built-in HTML5 media player.

If you want to disable this then you can set these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • media.directshow.enabled = false
  • media.windows-media-foundation.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
