What do you mean; 'installed phony add ones'?

Can you give us some of the web addresses you are having problems with? Several ideas to try now;

Clear the Cache Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

and

Remove Cookies Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode
