"email link" causes instability

Clicking the "email link" menu item gives a lot of problems:

The cursor oscillates between normal and hourglass. To get rid of this I have to close Firefox.

When I've done this, a lot of copies of Internet Explorer fire up, there's an error message window on each of them saying "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed". To get rid of these I have to close all the IE windows from the taskbar. This is worrying: the default mail client within FF is The Bat! - why on earth is IE firing up at all?

I have a feeling that this may have started after MS Update installed IE version 11, but that may be a coincidence.

I've reset FF - this lost most of my personal settings and is now a serious pain. I've put back some of the Addons and plugins, but my NoScript settings have vanished - where are they please?

I've now found out that it also happens if I click on a mailto:// in a document, so it's probably a mail client problem and nothing to do with Firefox.

But why it's trying to fire up IE for mail is beyond me.

Anyway, I'm now in communication with the makers of The Bat! and will see where it goes from there.

Do you have a folder on your desktop named "Old Firefox Data" created by the Reset feature?

Assuming so, your NoScript lists are in the old prefs.js file in that folder. I'm not sure of the official way to transplant that data into your new, fresh prefs.js file, but here's what I would try.

Note: if you cannot see file extensions like .js and .txt, turn on viewing of file extensions using the steps in this Microsoft support article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219.

(1) Make a copy of the old prefs.js and name it whitelist.txt (e.g., right-click > Copy, right-click > Paste, right-click Rename -- on that last step, make sure the extension gets changed from .js to .txt).

(2) Open whitelist.txt in your preferred text editor and search for maono which is part of the name of the NoScript-related preferences. You are looking for this line:

user_pref("capability.policy.maonoscript.sites", "site site site...");

(3) Delete everything up to the beginning of the list of sites and everything after the end. Also, remove the quotation marks at the beginning and end. Then save the modified file.

(4) In Firefox, open the NoScript Options dialog, and click the Whitelist tab. You'll notice two import buttons: one in that tab, and one along the bottom. You want to click the one in the tab. If you are nervous, first Export your existing (short new) list. And then import your whitelist.txt file.

Success?

Regarding the email problem, I'm not familiar with "The Bat!". Were you able to select it in the Options dialog as described in this article: Change the program used to open email links?

Thanks for both answers jscher2000.

On the NoScript one: as resetting didn't change anything, I copied the whole of the saved data back into my new profile and got back all my settings including NoScript. It was quicker than trying to work out which bits I needed to copy and doing it piecemeal.

The Bat! is an email client which I've been using for many years. It's my default mail reader and is on the drop-down menu in the Options | Applications | mailto menu item. I've never had this problem before. I last updated it on 4 November - I'm fairly sure that I've emailed links since then.

I've never had MS email clients on my machines.

Sometimes the registry settings for default applications become mixed up, defying all logic. Usually switching the default from Program A to Program B, then switching back from Program B to Program A will straighten it out.

Not sure what mail client is available on Windows 7 to serve as Program B, but assuming there's something readily available, I'd suggest giving that a try.

Tried that. Didn't work. Good idea, though.
