Recently, Emails I send in English are reported to be received in Greek on computers with the Internet Explorer browser.. What is happening and how do I fix it?

Several contacts have reported receiving my emails in Greek when I send them in English and see them in my "Sent" file as being in English. After 2 hours+ on the phone with ATT, it was discovered that if I access my mail on an Internet Explorer enabled computer, the same email shows up in Greek in the "Sent" folder. This has only happened recently and only to some recipients. One managed to "translate" these cryptic emails, but others have not. This is most inconvenient since I am arranging a conference. ATT's "Yahoo Escalation Team" tells me the problem is with my Mozilla browser. HELP

You might already have tried this with support, but just in case... When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

1. Clear Firefox's Cache

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"

2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here

While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

Then try reloading the page and test again. Does that help?

I wonder whether any of your add-ons could be interfering? A standard diagnostic for that is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."

If you can send yourself an email that's readable in IE, then that would points to one of your add-ons or custom settings (I can't imagine which one) as the problem.

Any luck?

Edit: By the way, I'm assuming it isn't literally being translated to the Greek language, but is suffering from some kind of font or symbol substitution.

Are you sure that there isn't a problem with the encoding?

  • Firefox > Web Developer > Character Encoding
  • View > Character Encoding
