when you had more bookmarks than the bookmarks toolbar could show, there used to be a pull down arrow at the end to show those not on the toolbar. Is that feature still available?

You should still see the chevron to open that list. It is possible that the Bookmarks Menu button is at the far right end of that toolbar and in that case you will find the chevron to the left of that toolbar button on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Thanks, but chevron is not anywhere on bookmarks toolbar
You may need to look harder if you do not see it as the chevron may be almost unnoticeable.
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this. I don't know what to look for when I get to the default theme---it is blank.
This gives no information as to what to do when and if I find something, which I have not because I don't know what to look for.
Can you attach a screenshot of the bookmarks toolbar area (full width)?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).
re: missing bookmark toolbar pull down for overflow bookmarks that won't fit on bookmark toolbar
Are you using an extension that hides the icons on the Bookmarks Toolbar ?
See:
I don't know what an extension is. I may have selected an option that I don't understand.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
- Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
- Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
Firefox did not work in Safe Mode
I just noticed that your above posted screenshot shows Thunderbird and not Firefox.
Do you have a problem with Thunderbird or with Firefox?
IMac caption says "Thunderbird", but the picture shows the Firefox "bookmarks toolbar". Firefox "bookmarks toolbar" is what I'm having trouble with, I don't think Thunderbird has a "bookmarks toolbar"
