I can't print from internet unless I save to file. This just started happening. Why?

I believe this started happening after an update. I want to turn off the "print to file" when printing on the internet. I would like to know how?

Assuming you did check actually from the firefox menu and it was showing the correct printer not some other printer of program then.

  1. Try in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode as it could be an add-on somehow interfering
  2. Look at this MozilaZine KB about Reset printer
  3. If that fails it may be worth considering setting up a new setting up a new profile or forcing a new one to be created.

Try

  • File -> Print -> and uncheck / un tick the 'print to file' option

The file menu print option should bring up your ordinary system printing dialogue options, ensure you have the required printer is selected and if you have a tick mark in the print to file option then removing that should solve the problem.

I don't have "print to file" checked and it hasn't been. This doesn't occur on Safari (which I also have) only on Firefox which leads me to believe, it got put into an update?

I made a new profile and that solved the printing problem but now I have messed up and lost all my website bookmarks. Is there a way I can get them back (many are for work)???? As you can probably tell, doing all this computer stuff is not my area of expertise!

I found a solution to my bookmarks but anyone using the above solution to correct this problem - will correct it but beware your bookmarks will disappear. I just happen to have most of my bookmarks under Internet Explorer (which I don't use anymore) and imported them.

Thank you to John for solution!

Thank you.

Make sure that you didn't had selected printing to a file in your previous Firefox profile.

Thank you for your response but John's solution solved my problem.

Printing ■ I am glad you solved that problem, however using an additional or a new profile has the disadvantage with bookmarks etc., it would have been better if the reset printer method had worked, you may still be able to get back all or most of the bookmarks if you act quickly and carefully

■ BOOKMARKS there are two differing methods that can be employed

  1. Restore - this works from .JSON format backups, not only the autobackups, but any copies of those you have made or any manual exports made in that format, but remember these overwrite everything. I explained this process in detail in an answer to Firefox sync scrambled all of my bookmarks ...
  2. Importing HTML - this allows duplicate full lists to be added if required
  • see Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
  • this appends ie adds the imported bookmarks to the end of your current set (at least from firefox 3) see also the MozilaZine KB Import bookmarks
  • although it only works with HTML files remember you may export bookmarks from firefox as html, that would include any other backups (the auto backups are in .JSON format as are standard manual backups). Remember to make manual backups to suitably named files as you work.
  • HTML format files are relatively easy to edit, as they are plain text format, however the simplest way may simply be to use a spare additional profile and import them into firefox, then edit in the organise bookmarks library where you can drag and drop and/or delete largish chunks.
  • do not forget the need to backup bookmarks as you work on them, as it is very easy to inadvertently overwrite something. It is also a good idea to make manual backups every now and again, especially when working on upgrades and new profiles. (full profiles can be backed up but that is another subject).

I am having the same problem, problem is, I cannot get a print dialogue box to do any checking in, it goes straight to "save as" window, we get no print dialogue box.

If reading the advice, and linked articles (light blue text) in this thread does not help, then it is probably best to start your own thread, that way we see your system details and you get to explain your own problem fully.
