The 2nd time of use I get,"Firefox is running, close or restart." How?

While using the computer I quite often use Firefox and then return to my screen. If I choose to again open Firefox I receive the message, "Firefox is already running, but is not responding, to open a new window ,you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." Restarting is a pain and yet I see no obvious way to close Firefox on the desktop. How do I do this?

See "Firefox is already running but is not responding" error - How to fix. It sounds like in your case that Firefox is not closing properly, in particular see the par in that article about hanging on exit.
