Do I gather you have no toolbar? is that the one that appears at the top of the actual email. the one with reply and forward buttons on it, or the write windows which has the send button. I am a little confused here.

Regardless, perhaps try restarting Thunderbird in Troubleshooting mode from the help menu and continuing when prompted. DO you still have this issue.
