Firefox 123.0 Now Opens up New Tab or Window - How to Override This?

Ever since I installed Firefox 123.0, when I execute a search on Yahoo.com, Firefox automatically opens up a new window or tab (depending upon how you have it set up in settings) when it didn't before. When I try this with Firefox using Google.com to search, it does NOT open up a new window/tab. But when I try it with Yahoo.com when using Google Chrome, it does NOT open up a new tab. So it would appear that the behavior is being caused by something in Firefox.

I tried making various changes in settings and Firefox about:config that were recommended in previous questions here, but they did not alter the behavior. I would like the behavior to return to simply performing the search within the same window (I can always scroll back to get the original page). Can anyone help?

Performing a Yahoo search opens results in the same tab for me, clicking a search result opens it in a new tab on Firefox and Chrome.

Try clearing site cookies and disabling Tracking Protection for the site.

Does it still happen in Troubleshoot Mode?

Thank you for responding. Not sure that I would want to clear my cookies. Still happens when I disable Tracking Protection and still happens in Troubleshooting Mode.

You can clear cookies for the current site (Yahoo) without affecting other sites.

I am aware of that, but I don't want to lose the cookies for Yahoo.com. Not to mention that I've had numerous occasions when I was instructed to clear my cookies to attempt to resolve an issue and it didn't help. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

Do you mean that on your Yahoo results page, individual results open in a new window/tab? That should be governed by your setting on: https://search.yahoo.com/preferences/preferences

Someone reported that if Yahoo is set as the home page, running a search on the home page opened a new tab for the results page. There doesn't seem to be a setting for that, as far as I know.

Thank you for responding.

It is the latter of the two issues you described. Running a search opens a new tab or window for the results page. Not sure I understand why this behavior started with this release of Firefox, but I guess I'll have to get used to it. Thanks again.

Does it still happen in Developer Edition? Make sure you stay signed out of your sync account when testing.

No it does not happen with Developer's Edition.

I will think about clearing cookies. It shouldn't be necessary. But then I lose functionality until I reestablish those cookies through usage.

Clearing the cookies resolved the issue.

I spoke too soon. It's happening again now.

Did you sign into Yahoo after clearing cookies? Try clearing cookies and staying signed out.
