How do I get a new tab to open my home page, right now it uses the address bar?

What you can set in "Settings -> Home" as the new tab page is limited.
You can look for an extension on the Add-ons website to set the new tab page. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

You can set browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar = false on the about:config page to make the new tab page use its search bar instead of the location bar.
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".
