Firefox keeps "hanging" and becomes very slow to the point where it doesn't work at all. I tried clearing the cache, etc. Doesn't help.

This has been going on for a while. I've cleared the cache, files, cookies, etc....none of this has fixed the problem. The browser becomes really slow and sometimes crashes. Error reports are sent to Mozilla, I've updated to the latest browser...nothing helps. This only happens after I've been browsing for a while. It's fine at first, then the problems start.

About how long before Firefox gets in trouble?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe mode,

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Press the Reply button. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

This could possibly be a memory usage issue where Firefox uses too much memory and slows down because of the OS paging data to the hard drive.

When multi-process windows in Firefox is enabled then Firefox will use more memory and may be less responsive.

You can try this to see if it has effect:

  • set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4)
  • disable multi-process windows in Firefox

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page: via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
