How do I delete or move bookmarks that aren't in folders?

I am on a Mac using El Capitan and Firefox 45.0.2. When I go to "show all bookmarks," I only see folders, not all my bookmarks. When I go to bookmarks from the menu bar, if my mouse touches a bookmark, I am automatically taken to that page and have to hit the star button and delete each bookmark individually, With over 25 years of bookmarks that need organizing this is onerous. I am also not able to move bookmarks by dragging. They automatically go back to their original place. Is there a fix for this? I am not the most computer savvy person, so a really simple answer will be tremendously appreciated.  :-)

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
