Why can't I access my options menu/pages without disabling addons?

The last two firefox updates somehow rendered my option inaccessible. I have to boot in safe mood to make any changes which is annoying. I did a refresh as well as a new reinstall and I still have the problem. All my addons worked fine until this last update. I also use Avast antivirus and tried to disable some options I thought may interfere with firefox but did not disable "web protection" altogether. I am at a loss.

It could be a corrupt file. If so, a clean re-install will get rid of it.

Your extensions list (next to your question, Question Details > More System Details) shows 12 enabled extensions, which is unusual if you did a Refresh...

Could you try disabling just the extensions you can live without for 24 hours to see whether one of those might be the culprit? You can do it on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then turn off the ones you won't need for a while on the right side.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

Also, what about your theme, do you use a Noia theme?

Did as suggested. No help. Disabled Noia theme as well. The following extentions were NOT disabled: Roboform Adblock Febe Sessions Manger Mouse Gestures

As I said, these all worked before the last two updates.

Maybe someone else will recognize the problem but if all else fails, sometimes the program files get corrupted during an update. For that, we recommend:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 43.0.3 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does a cleanly reinstalled Firefox work normally??

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Restart Firefox. Are there any problems?

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

this did not work either. Moreover, as I was doing what was recommended, another update for Mozilla began. It is now 43.0.3 and still have the same problem. Is a clean install the only option left?

Ok so I decided to try disabling my Aeon Clouds theme and chose the default theme and restarted Firefox. Lo and behold my options were available to me so the themes were the culprit all along. Thank you for all your help. I may try a reinstall anyway as jscher2000 suggested. I really appreciate all the help FredMcD. At the very least I fixed the shockwave issue.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Aeon Clouds is not compatible with the new tab-based Options page vs. the old Options dialog. There is some discussion of this in the reviews, but no update has been released to fix it, as far as I can tell.

That was very good work. Well Done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.
