I changed my password in my Juno account and have logged in via a browser with the new password several time. But Thunderbird attempts to connect continue to fail. I deleted the old password in Thunderbird in the Privacy & Security section thinking it would update when the new password works - unfortunately, it never works. I reviewed all the Juno settings in Thunderbird and they are all consistent with the Juno Support recommendations. Now what?

Thunderbird authentication issue with secondary Outlook account

Hello,

I'm having an authentication issue with Thunderbird on Fedora when trying to add a second Microsoft account.

My main @outlook.com account works without any problems using IMAP/SMTP and OAuth2. However, I can't get my @outlook.fr account to work.

For the @outlook.fr account, I'm using:

IMAP: outlook.office365.com, port 993, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 SMTP: smtp.office365.com, port 587, STARTTLS, OAuth2

When I add the account, the Microsoft login page opens normally. I sign in with the @outlook.fr account, complete 2FA, and Microsoft confirms that the account has been successfully connected to Thunderbird.

However, as soon as I return to Thunderbird, I get an authentication error saying that it was unable to log in to outlook.office365.com with that username.

I've already tried clearing Thunderbird's saved passwords, cookies, and web cache. I also confirmed that IMAP is enabled in Outlook web settings, checked the account aliases/sign-in preferences, and verified the server names and ports.

Since the Microsoft authentication itself completes successfully, I'm not sure why Thunderbird fails immediately afterwards. The same setup works with my @outlook.com account, so the problem seems to be specific to the second account.

Has anyone encountered this before, or is there anything else I should check?

Thanks.

Unable to log in to my email account through the Thunderbird desktop application due to an authentication error, although the same credentials work correctly on webmail.

Dear Thunderbird Support Team,

I am unable to log in to my email account through the Mozilla Thunderbird desktop application. I am getting an “Authentication Error” stating that Thunderbird is unable to log in to the mail server and that the username, password, or configuration may be incorrect.

However, I have verified that the same email credentials are working correctly through webmail, so the account password is valid and the mailbox is accessible.

Issue Details:

Application: Mozilla Thunderbird Desktop Issue: Unable to authenticate/login to the email account Error: “Authentication error – Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password.” Webmail Login: Working successfully Thunderbird Login: Failing with authentication error Operating System: Windows

I have already checked the email credentials and attempted to configure the account in Thunderbird, but the issue persists.

Kindly help me identify the cause of the authentication failure and provide the correct Thunderbird configuration/settings required to access the email account.

I can provide screenshots and the current Thunderbird account configuration if required.

Thank you for your support.

iCloud IMAP authentication fails after restarting Thunderbird

Hello, I am experiencing an authentication problem with an iCloud Mail account in Thunderbird 153.0.3 (64-bit) on Windows. The iCloud Mail account itself works normally. … (mear ynfo)

Hello,

I am experiencing an authentication problem with an iCloud Mail account in Thunderbird 153.0.3 (64-bit) on Windows.

The iCloud Mail account itself works normally. I can access my mailbox through Apple's web interface, and I was also able to add the same account to Microsoft Outlook and successfully send an email from it.

The problem occurs specifically in Thunderbird.

When I initially add the iCloud account to Thunderbird, the account connects successfully and my mail is downloaded. However, after completely closing Thunderbird and launching it again, Thunderbird asks me to enter the password again. When I enter my current Apple app-specific password, authentication fails.

I have already generated several new app-specific passwords and tested them. I also tested both the username without the domain and the full iCloud email address as the username. The result is the same.

Current IMAP settings:

Server: imap.mail.me.com Port: 993 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Normal password

Thunderbird does not offer OAuth2 as an authentication method for this account. The available methods are Normal password, Encrypted password, Kerberos/GSSAPI, NTLM and TLS certificate.

The Thunderbird log shows that the connection to the Apple IMAP server is established successfully. The server reports the following authentication capabilities:

AUTH=ATOKEN AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=ATOKEN2 AUTH=XOAUTH2

Thunderbird then attempts PLAIN authentication, but the server responds:

NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication Failed

Thunderbird subsequently tries the old-style authentication method, which also fails with the same error.

I have also tried changing the IMAP port from 993/SSL-TLS to 143/STARTTLS, but the connection to imap.mail.me.com:143 fails as well.

The most unusual part is that the account works immediately after being added to Thunderbird, but stops authenticating after Thunderbird is restarted.

Could this be related to Thunderbird's handling of iCloud app-specific passwords, the password manager, the Thunderbird profile, or a compatibility issue with the current Thunderbird version?

I have attached the relevant Thunderbird IMAP log.

Thank you.

This notice fairly regularly appears in the last couple of weeks - I do not trust the AI solution as everything APPEARS to work normally on Thunderbird - were it not for that notice I'd think all was normal! Is rectification of something needed? If so simple instructions needed and advice as to the cause - I'm no techie and wonder if I meddle I'll cause problems I currently don't seem to be experiencing.

Thunderbird for NixOS nixos - 1.0

I could not figure out how to provide a log at all. If there is a way, please let me know and I will provide one.

Whenever I try to log in with gmail, I get stuck on this dead end:

  1. Set up gmail server config (because my email ends in @vcu.edu, however I have tested this with a proper @gmail.com email and observed the exact same behavior)
  2. Get propted to login with google, which works
  3. Get to the "Mozilla Thunderbird Email wants access to your Google Account" page, select all and hit continue
  4. get redirected to `http://localhost:35141/?state=<string of chars>&iss=https://accounts.google.com&code=<another string of chars>&scope=https://mail.google.com/%20https://www.googleapis.com/auth/carddav%20https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar` This page does not load, I just get a "unable to connect" error
  5. get a notification stating "Authentication failure while connecting to server `imap.gmail.com`
  6. get ANOTHER prompt to log in with google, exact same thing happens

please note that the port is random and is different every single time. also, google does not register that I have allowed Thunderbird access to my account, and it prompts me again every single time. For some time now two Thunderbird Icons have displayed in my Windows task bar. One opens the program I have used for years as normal but the other opens a sign-in screen requiring a user name and password. Today only one version appears and that is the sign in screen. After a lot of steps -including a request for Thunderbird to access my Google account I finally got access to the two e-mail accounts I keep on "my" Thunderbird but the display is far harder to read than the earlier one. After I exited the program I found to re-open it I got the same log-on screen??? How can I access the Mozilla program I am familiar with?

when attempting to view my passwords, (by selecting in Thunderbird, edit, settings, passwords-saved passwords, show passwords), I can not see them because the window, 'Saved Logins' can not be resized. Scrolling left or right does not work and clicking and dragging the corners or edges does not work. All I can see is about the first 8 characters which is not the entire password. Also I used to be able to change the passwords in this window but that seems no longer supported.

I have a ton of email accounts in Thunderbird on Mac. I recently added a new account, and it constantly pops up the Authentication Required - Mozilla Thunderbird window. Below that it says: https://OURURL is requesting your username and password. The username and password are both stored in the passwords, and I don't get the password needed message, and can email and receive in between the annoying pop up.

I have this same issue on a new computer we just set up with other email addresses too, so I think it has to do with some automatic setting when adding a new account that happened in the most recent release. I do not get the authentication message for any of my older accounts.

I tried all the things I could find online - deleted and re-added account, deleted the password files in the profile folder, reset the startup cache, etc. I searched the support base, and can't find anything

We host our own email through cPanel. All the server settings are correct, or we wouldn't be able to use the email address at all.
