Youtube videos weren't playing, so I tried to update Firefox (I'm on a Mac 10.7.5). But I get this message: "The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again." No items are indicated so I can't make sure they are unlocked.

I can't even open Firefox anymore, I get a message: "You can't open the application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete."

I also tried to uninstall the current Firefox in my Applications, but it doesn't go away when I drag it to the trash.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Wierd. When I clicked the email link to confirm my support forum question, Firefox opened right up, in the newest version. It seems to have updated itself, and to be working now! I'm going to try closing it and opening it again and see what happens.

No, when I close it I have the same problem, it won't open. But I can open it by clicking the link on the email from the support forum. Still wierd!

If you can open it from a link, you can try the following:

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did you do a clean reinstall of Firefox and dragged the Firefox application to the Trash?

You can find the full version of the latest Firefox 23 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

Still a little wierd in that the icon in the dock now opens the newest version of Firefox just fine. But if I go to the Applications folder and click on the Firefox application there, I get a message that "You can't open the application Firefox because it may be damaged or incomplete." But at least I can use Firefox now.

Sorry, I meant to add that dragging the icon from the Application Folder to the Trash doesn't work.

Make sure that Firefox isn't running and that Firefox is installed properly.

You may need to check the permissions if you can't move Firefox to the Trash.

Could you tell me how to check the permissions?
